I’ll never forget the coaching session that changed everything for one of my client teams.
They were in survival mode.
Deadlines. Burnout. High turnover.
The leader—brilliant, driven, and deeply committed—was doing everything she could think of to keep her team afloat.
But morale was tanking. Trust was low. Performance was slipping.
When I asked her what her team heard from her most often, she paused.
Her answer?
“We need to move faster.”
Here’s the thing: communication isn’t just what you say—it’s what people feel when you say it.
When your message is rooted in pressure, people shut down.
When your message is rooted in purpose, people rise up.
So I challenged her to say something different.
The next morning, she walked into the team meeting and said this:
“I know things are intense right now. But I want you to hear this clearly: I believe in you. And I’m here with you. Let’s figure this out—together.”
That moment changed the tone, the energy, and the momentum. Not overnight. But immediately.
Because people don’t just need direction.
They need to feel seen. Safe. Supported.
Neuroscience tells us that when people feel threatened (tight deadlines, unclear expectations, silence from leaders), their brain goes into protective mode—fight, flight, or freeze.
But when leaders communicate with clarity and connection, the brain activates trust, collaboration, and solution-focused thinking.
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be present.
Name the Reality
Acknowledge the challenge. Say what’s true. Avoid pretending everything’s fine when it’s not.
